一文字秀虎（仲代达矢饰）征战多年，亚洲手段残忍。在七十岁时，亚洲秀虎准备将家业一分为三，由三个儿子分掌大权。他把太郎孝虎（寺尾聪饰）、次郎正虎（根津甚八饰）、三郎直虎（隆大介饰）叫到跟前，以“支箭会断，砚支箭折不断”喻语告诫三兄弟，嘱咐他们要休戚与共。三郎当场把三支箭横在膝上折断，以抗议父亲枉经乱世，而不知人情。秀虎大怒，将三郎驱逐出境。三郎遂到邻国入赘为婿。而之后一文字家果然被三郎言中，背信弃义的告诫果然成真，父子及兄弟间的纷乱开始，迎接他们的将是什么命运？

回复 :1971年，五位即将毕业的德州大学生，由於当时越战正如火如荼的进行中，他们面临着被徵召的命运，不只如此，对往後人生出路的安排，亦让他们心烦意乱。於是带头的盖德纳（凯文科斯特纳，「与狼共舞」、「未来水世界」）提出开车创天涯的建议，希望能在踏入现实社会之前，好好享受年轻人的特权。本片原为学生形式的记录片，片长只有22分种，但是史蒂芬史匹伯看过之後，建议导演凯文雷诺，可将本片拍成一部电影，在本片中主角凯文科斯特纳有精湛的演出。
